Peter Jackson shot the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy in New Zealand. The country’s exotic landscapes breathed life into the film, from idyllic Hobbiton to the dreary Mount Doom in Mordor. Located in the North Island, Matamata is one of the most visited film locations in New Zealand. Matamata was the Shire, and Hobbiton region of Middle-earth depicted using the lush farming environment surrounding this town in Waikato. The village, Hobbiton, was meticulously recreated in this location. In 2011, it was reconstructed back into the Shire for the Hobbit Trilogy, and it has now become a permanent tourist attraction. |
